Professor Aline Vandevelde, or Aline Colle-Vandevelde as she is also known, is one of my most beloved heroes. She taught anatomy to dentistry students when I was a student at the university of Gent, around 30 years ago. I admired her for her passion for the job and for science, her integrity, her friendliness and her courage.

I have been informed this morning that she died on December 3, the day before yesterday. I had not seen or communicated with her since last I saw her in 1985, but I have never forgotten her and my respect and admiration for her have never faded.

Aline Vandevelde is the woman who taught me the scientific method, the importance of evidence, and scientific integrity. Her influence on me cannot be overestimated.

She was one of a kind, and it saddens me deeply that I will never be able to see and speak with her again.

Her death is a loss to us all.
