drop

Drop is the Dutch name for liquorice. It is a type of candy that contains juice of the root of the liquorice plant, Glycyrrhiza glabra. This juice contains glycyrrhizin, a product that is 30 to 50 times sweeter than sugar, and reputed not to harm the teeth.

Once thought to be healthful and beneficial for treating colds and sore throats, modern medicine has shown that liquorice can be the direct cause of high blood pressure and doctors in the Netherlands, the country where liquorice is most popular, are taught to routinely ask patients how much liquorice they consume.

Zoute drop or salty liquorice is very popular in the Netherlands. The salty taste does not come from table salt (sodium chloride), but from ammonium chloride (sal ammoniac), called salmiak in Dutch. The strongest of these are called dubbelzoute drop (double-salted liquorice). These are definitely an acquired taste, a food fit for Klingons.
